What is an Aircraft Dispatcher and what do they do?
- The Aircraft Dispatcher is a licensed airman certificated by the Federal Aviation Administration.
- Must be at least 23 years old (at the time of FAA Practical Exam)
- They share joint responsibility with the captain for the safety and operational control of flights under his/her guidance.
- They authorize, regulate, and control commercial airline flights according to government and company regulations to expedite and ensure safety of flight.
- They are also responsible for economics, passenger service, and operational control of day to day flight operations.
- They analyze and evaluate meteorological information to determine potential hazards to safety of flight and to select the most desirable and economic route of flight.
- They compute the amount of fuel required for the safe completion of flight according to type of aircraft, distance of flight, maintenance limitations, weather conditions, and minimum fuel requirements, prescribed by federal aviation regulations.
- They prepare flight plans containing information such as maximum allowable takeoff and landing weights, weather reports, field conditions, NOTAMS (Notices to Airmen), and many other informational components required for the safe completion of flight.
- They prepare and sign the dispatch release which is the legal document providing authorization for a flight to depart.
- They delay or cancel flights if unsafe conditions threaten the safety of his/her aircraft or passengers.
- They monitor weather conditions, aircraft position reports, and aeronautical navigation charts to evaluate the progress of flight.
- They update the pilot in command of significant changes to weather or flight plan and recommend flight plan alternates, such as changing course, altitude and, if required, enroute landings in the interest of safety and economy.
- They originate and disseminate flight information to others in their company including stations and reservations. This is also the source of information provided to the traveling public.
- They have undergone extensive training to have earned the coveted Aircraft Dispatcher's certificate having taken and passed both an extensive oral examination and the comprehensive Dispatch ADX test, administered by the Federal Aviation Administration. These tests are equivalent to the same Air Transport Pilot (ATP) written and oral examinations that an airline captain must successfully complete.

AVIATION FORECAST FROM THE FAA:
System traffic in revenue passenger miles (RPMs) is projected to increase by 2.5 percent a year between 2020 and 2040. Domestic RPMs are forecast to grow 2.3 percent a year while International RPMs are forecast to grow significantly faster at 3.0 percent a year. System capacity as measured by available seat miles (ASMs) is forecast to grow in line with the increases in demand. The number of seats per aircraft is growing, especially in the regional jet market, where we expect the number of 50 seat regional jets to fall to just a handful by 2030, replaced by 70-90 seat aircraft. Although the U.S. economy saw solid growth in 2019, economic activity around the world slowed, and labor costs rose, resulting in profits for U.S. airlines subsiding further from 2016’s record levels. Nevertheless, the FAA expects U.S. carrier profitability to remain steady as solid demand fed by a stable economy offsets rising labor costs. Over the long term, we see a competitive and profitable aviation industry characterized by increasing demand for air travel and airfares growing more slowly than overall inflation, reflecting growing U.S. and global economies.
